Sediment Stops at the Fence Line
Silt fence and sediment control in Providence is about keeping construction soil out of the streets and storm drains that lead to the Providence River and Narragansett Bay. The EPA describes how rain on a construction site picks up loose soil, debris and chemicals and carries them into storm sewers or straight into rivers, lakes and coastal waters. A properly trenched silt fence, protected catch basins and a stabilized entrance stop most of that before it leaves the lot. As silt fence contractors, we install those controls before grading starts and keep them working until the ground is seeded.
Where silt fence works, and where it fails
The fence itself is woven geotextile fabric on stakes, with its bottom edge buried in a trench so water has to pass through the fabric rather than under it. It slows sheet flow and lets sediment settle on the uphill side. It is not a dam for concentrated flow; if a swale or pipe aims water straight at the fence, it will overtop or blow out. That is why we look at drainage paths first and run the fence level across the slope, curling each end up the hill.
Installed to the plan
On building projects, the location and type of sediment controls usually come from an erosion and sediment control plan approved for the job. We install what the plan calls for: standard or wire-backed fence, inlet protection at catch basins, and other perimeter controls. On small residential jobs without a formal plan, we recommend a sensible layout that protects the street, neighbors and any nearby wetland or waterway.
Inlet protection on city streets
In Providence and the older inner suburbs, most lots sit close to the street, with a catch basin a few yards from the curb cut. A filter bag, silt fence barrier or gravel-and-mesh insert keeps sediment from washing straight into the storm system during the first rain. We set them so water can still enter in a big storm and the street does not flood.
Maintenance is half the job
A silt fence full of sediment, sagging between stakes or knocked down by equipment does nothing. The federal construction rule the EPA describes requires erosion and sediment controls to be designed, installed and maintained to minimize discharges. We can return after storms to clean out built-up sediment, re-trench undermined sections and replace torn fabric. When the site is seeded and stabilized, we pull the fence and stakes and rake out the trench line.
Glacial soil and trenching
The stony till common in this part of Rhode Island makes trenching slow by hand, so we use machines where we can to get a clean trench and full burial of the fabric. Where ledge or boulders block the trench, we switch to a weighted or staked alternative rather than leaving a gap.

Fence with a wire backing, for long slopes and sites that send down a lot of sediment.
Catch basin inlet protection
Filter bags, fence barriers or gravel-and-mesh inserts at storm drains.

4. Maintain
Cleanout and repairs after storms, as scheduled.
5. Remove and seed
Controls removed once the site is stabilized, and the trench line seeded.

Why Choose Us for Silt Fence & Sediment Control
Fence that is actually trenched
Fabric buried in a trench, not laid on the surface and hoped for.
Drainage looked at first
We set fence on contour and away from concentrated flow.
Seeding from the same crew
When it is time to stabilize, we hydroseed and pull the fence ourselves.
Silt Fence & Sediment Control Questions
Does my small project need silt fence?
If soil could wash onto the street, a neighbor's yard or a storm drain, a short run of fence and inlet protection is cheap insurance. Larger projects usually have controls required by their approved plan.
On a Providence job site, when does the silt fence come down?
Until the disturbed area is stabilized, which usually means grass is established or a permanent cover is in place. Then it comes out.
Can you install silt fence on ledge or pavement?
Where a trench is not possible, we use weighted or staked alternatives such as fiber socks so there is no gap.
Do you clean out silt fence after storms?
Yes, as a scheduled maintenance visit. We remove built-up sediment, re-set stakes and replace damaged sections.
