Seeding a Town Surrounded by Water
Hydroseeding in Bristol happens on a peninsula. Narragansett Bay borders the town on the west and Mount Hope Bay on the east, and more than half of Bristol's 20.6 square miles is water. Wind off both bays, salty air and sandy shore soils all play into how we seed here.
Mount Hope and higher ground
Elevations in Bristol run from sea level to about 131 feet. Mount Hope, once Metacomet's base during King Philip's War, has a rocky ledge called Massasoit's Seat that looks out over Mount Hope Bay. Lots on the higher ground have slopes and shallow, rocky spots. We add topsoil over ledge and use blankets on the steeper faces.
Colt State Park's fields
Colt State Park covers 464 acres along the West Passage, on land Samuel P. Colt assembled from three farms starting in 1905. Its broad lawns near the water show that turf can do well on this coast with the right grass. For private shore lots we lean toward salt-tolerant fescue blends.
Rain and seeding windows
Bristol averages about 47.4 inches of precipitation and about 36 inches of snow a year, and October is the wettest month on average. That makes early September a good target: warm soil for germination and steady rain to follow, before late-fall storms.
Harbor and town lots
Bristol Harbor has over 800 moorings in seven fields, and the older streets around it have small, close yards. Those jobs are mostly lawn repair and new lawns after renovations, sprayed from the street.

Bristol Questions
Will salt air hurt a new lawn on Poppasquash?
Salt-tolerant fescue blends handle it best. We choose the mix for exposed shore lots.
Why seed in early September instead of October?
October is Bristol's wettest month on average, and seed needs a few warm weeks to root before storms and frost.
My lot near Mount Hope has ledge. Can grass grow there?
Yes, once we add enough topsoil over the rock.
Can you reach a small yard on a narrow harbor street?
Yes. We spray from the curb with a long hose.
