Frequently Asked Questions

Hydroseeding Questions

What is the best time to plant grass seed in Rhode Island?

For the cool-season grasses that grow here, late summer to early fall is the main window, roughly late August through September, with some October work in warm spots. Spring is the second choice; it works, but weeds compete harder and summer heat arrives quickly.

Can I hydroseed my existing lawn?

Yes, if the lawn is thin rather than solid. We mow it short, rake or core-aerate so the slurry reaches soil, and spray over it. Where the lawn is mostly weeds or dead patches, we usually recommend a full renovation with grading and new topsoil first.

Is there a downside to hydroseeding?

You do not get an instant lawn the way you do with sod, and the area needs steady watering for about three weeks while seed germinates. The slurry can also stain siding or concrete if it is not masked or rinsed, which is why we protect edges as we spray.

How much does hydroseeding cost around Providence?

National cost guides put residential hydroseeding somewhere between $0.07 and $0.35 per sq ft, and HomeGuide adds that most outfits set a job minimum, typically $300 to $500 or higher. Grading and topsoil are billed on top. Once we have walked the yard we write down one figure, and that signed figure is your bill.

How fast will I see grass?

In warm soil, hydroseeded grass generally shows in five to seven days; Angi's figure is that most hydroseeded lawns are up within 7 to 14 days. Plan on the first cut roughly four to six weeks out, when the blades reach about 4 inches.

Will hydroseed hold on a steep front bank?

Most short banks hold well with a heavier mulch rate and tackifier. On very steep or long slopes we add a blanket, or spray a bonded fiber matrix, to keep seed and soil on the hill through heavy rain.

Can you reach my backyard if there is no driveway access?

Usually. The hose runs from the truck parked on the street, so we can spray behind a house or down a narrow side yard without driving equipment over the lawn.

New Lawn Hydroseeding Questions

What does hydroseeding run for an average Providence yard?

HomeGuide's figures are roughly $1,000 to $1,750 for a 5,000-square-foot lawn and $1,900 to $2,800 for a quarter acre. Loam, grading and stone removal come on top. The number on your signed quote is the real price.

How does a hydroseeded lawn compare with sod once it grows in?

Once it fills in, it holds up just as well, and it is often rooted deeper because it grew in your own soil. Sod gives an instant look; hydroseed takes about six weeks to fill in but costs a fraction as much.

Can I walk on it?

Keep off it except to move hoses until after the first or second mow. Early foot traffic crushes seedlings and leaves bare paths.

Why is the mulch green?

The dye shows where the slurry landed, so coverage is even. It fades within a few days of sun and rain.

What if it rains hard the day after?

The tackifier and fiber mulch are made to hold through normal rain. A severe downpour on a slope can move some slurry; we check and touch up thin spots.

Builder & Commercial Hydroseeding Questions

Do you work as a subcontractor to site and general contractors?

Yes. Most of our commercial seeding is done for builders, site contractors and property managers, scheduled around their grading.

Can you seed to a specific mix on the plans?

Yes. If the plan names a mix and rate, we source that mix and apply it at the specified rate.

What happens if grading finishes in November?

We apply a heavier mulch layer, often with a cover crop, to hold the soil over winter, then overseed with the permanent mix in spring.

How fast can you cover a large site?

A single tank load covers thousands of square feet, so a few acres is typically a one- or two-day job once grade is ready, depending on access and water supply.

Slope & Erosion Control Questions

Do I need a blanket or is hydroseed enough?

Short, moderate banks usually hold with a heavier hydromulch rate. Steep or long slopes, and anywhere water flows across the surface, generally need a blanket or bonded fiber matrix.

Will someone have to pull the blankets up later?

No. Straw and coir blankets rot away on the slope as the grass grows up through them. Some contain plastic netting; we can use natural-netting products near areas where wildlife or mowing are a concern.

What is a bonded fiber matrix?

It is sprayed mulch with a much stronger binder, so it cures into a single porous crust over the soil. It protects seed on steep ground where a blanket is hard to install.

Can you fix a bank that has already washed out?

Yes. We fill the gullies, regrade the face, deal with the water source, and then seed and cover it.

Silt Fence & Sediment Control Questions

Does my small project need silt fence?

If soil could wash onto the street, a neighbor's yard or a storm drain, a short run of fence and inlet protection is cheap insurance. Larger projects usually have controls required by their approved plan.

On a Providence job site, when does the silt fence come down?

Until the disturbed area is stabilized, which usually means grass is established or a permanent cover is in place. Then it comes out.

Can you install silt fence on ledge or pavement?

Where a trench is not possible, we use weighted or staked alternatives such as fiber socks so there is no gap.

Do you clean out silt fence after storms?

Yes, as a scheduled maintenance visit. We remove built-up sediment, re-set stakes and replace damaged sections.

Yard Grading & Loam Questions

How much loam does a new lawn need?

Most lawns do well with several inches of good topsoil. We probe the yard and calculate the yardage needed to bring thin areas up to that depth, then list it on the estimate.

Water sits against my foundation after rain. Can grading solve that?

Usually. We reshape the yard so it pitches away from the walls, and where that is not enough we add a trench drain or carry the downspouts farther out.

Do you haul away the rocks and debris?

Yes. Stones, brick and construction debris raked out of the yard are hauled off as part of the job.

Can you work in a small city yard with no machine access?

We use compact equipment where it fits and hand work where it does not. Access affects the price, so we look at it during the visit.

Lawn Repair & Overseeding Questions

Can I hydroseed over my existing lawn?

Yes, for thin lawns. We mow short and aerate so the slurry reaches soil. If the lawn is mostly weeds, a renovation works better.

When should I overseed in Providence?

Late August through September is best for cool-season grass. Spring works for small repairs, but seedlings have less time before summer heat.

Will overseeding get rid of weeds?

A thicker lawn crowds weeds out over time, but it does not kill them. Heavy weed cover usually calls for a renovation.

How soon can I mow after overseeding?

Wait until new grass reaches about four inches, typically several weeks after seeding, and mow with a sharp blade.
