Hydroseeding Across Coventry's Wide Spaces

Hydroseeding in Coventry covers the largest town in Rhode Island by land area, about 59.5 square miles. The eastern side holds old mill villages like Anthony, Washington and Quidnick, while the western end stayed rural. The town has grown steadily for decades, from about 15,400 people in 1960 to 35,688 in 2020, and and the town was settled as farmland in the early 18th century, so many new homes go up on old field or woodland soil.

More rain than the coast

Coventry's 1991 to 2020 normals show close to 52 inches of precipitation a year, which beats Providence by several inches, with December, October and March the wettest months. More rain helps germination but also means more runoff from bare ground. On sloped lots we use a heavier hydromulch, and on new construction we get silt fence up before the first big storm.

Lake and pond lots

Johnson's Pond, also called the Flat River Reservoir, was built as a backup water supply for the town's mills, and since 2022 state approval is needed before its water level is changed. Carbuncle Pond covers 39 acres near the Connecticut line. Homes around these waters should keep soil out of them, so we pair new lawns with sediment barriers near the shore.

Woodland edges

The Audubon Society's George B. Parker woodland covers 860 acres in town, and plenty of house lots back up to woods. Cleared woodland soil tends to be thin and acidic, so topsoil and lime are often part of the job.

Along the greenway

The 15-mile Coventry Greenway follows an old rail line from the Connecticut border to West Warwick. Homes near it often have long, narrow yards that are easy to reach with a hose.

Coventry Questions

Does Coventry's extra rain change how you seed?

Yes. We use more mulch on slopes and put sediment control up early on new lots.

My house is on Johnson's Pond. Can you seed down toward the water?

We seed the lawn area and keep a sediment barrier between it and the shore until the grass is established.

Why does grass struggle on my cleared lot?

Former woodland soil is often thin and acidic. Topsoil and lime fix most of that.

How far out in western Coventry do you go?

All the way to the Connecticut line.
