Cranston Lawns, East and West

Hydroseeding in Cranston splits along Interstate 295. West of the highway is a large, semirural section where housing development has been heavy in recent years, so builders there need fast, even grass on freshly graded lots. East of the highway the yards are older and smaller, and most calls are for renovating a tired lawn or seeding over a new drainage line.

New construction in western Cranston

On a new house lot the topsoil has usually been stripped, stockpiled and spread back in a rush. We check depth before we spray, fill thin spots and shape the final grade to shed rain off the foundation. A builder who needs a lawn for a closing gets germination in about one to two weeks in good weather, which is quicker than waiting on dry seed and straw.

The Pawtuxet River edge

The original town of 1754 was carved from land north of the Pawtuxet River, and the river still marks the southern line for its last few miles. In March 2010 heavy rain pushed the Pawtuxet to a record crest, and the flooding was the worst the area had seen in over 200 years. Riverside yards that took on water or were regraded afterward are good candidates for a hydroseed lawn with an erosion control blanket on the bank above the high water line.

Older east-side yards

Neighborhoods closer to Providence and the Edgewood shoreline have mature trees and compacted soil. For these lawns we core aerate, add topsoil where needed and overseed or fully hydroseed. Shade-tolerant fescue mixes do better under the big maples than straight bluegrass.

Keeping sediment on the lot

A graded lot next to a street drain will shed mud in the first heavy rain. Silt fence goes in along the downhill side of the lot, protect inlets, and spray as soon as grading is done so the ground is not left bare.

Cranston Questions

How soon can a builder show a hydroseeded lot in Cranston?

In warm, moist weather, green fuzz shows in about a week and a mowable stand in four to six weeks. Cold or dry weather slows that down.

My yard flooded from the Pawtuxet years ago. Should I worry about seeding near the river?

Keep new grass above the normal high water line and use a blanket on the bank itself. Low spots that flood again may need regrading first.

Is hydroseed cheaper than sod for a big western lot?

On large lots it usually is. We give a written estimate for both if you want to compare.

Can you work around the trees in my older yard?

Yes. We avoid piling soil over roots and choose a shade-tolerant seed mix for the covered areas.
