Seekonk Lawns on Former Farmland

Hydroseeding in Seekonk usually means seeding old farm ground. Seekonk was mainly a farming community for about 200 years and stayed largely agricultural into the 20th century. Few farms are left, and many have been turned into housing developments, which means a lot of new lawns on old field soil.

Field soil and compaction

Old cropland usually grows grass well, but by the time a house is built the ground has been driven over by heavy equipment. We loosen the surface, spread topsoil where it was stripped and fine grade before spraying.

Two watersheds

Seekonk lies within both the Ten Mile River and Narragansett Bay watersheds. Soil that washes off a construction site ends up in one or the other. Silt fence at the low edge of a lot and quick seeding are the standard fix, and the Massachusetts conservation commission may set conditions near streams or wetlands.

Commercial corridor

Route 6 is the town's main retail corridor, and Route 114A has its own exit on I-195. Commercial pads and parking lot islands along these roads need turf and sediment control during building. Hydroseed handles islands and banks that are awkward to sod.

Low and level

Seekonk's listed elevation is about 49 feet, and much of the residential ground between I-195 and Route 44 is gently rolling. That makes for straightforward seeding, but low corners can hold water, so we check drainage first. A few minutes with a level and a hose test tells us whether a corner needs a regrade or just topsoil.

Seekonk Questions

My new house is on an old farm. Do I still need topsoil?

Often the builder stripped it. We check depth and add topsoil where it is thin.

Can you seed parking lot islands on Route 6?

Yes. Hydroseed reaches small islands and banks easily.

Does the conservation commission get involved in seeding?

Near wetlands or streams it may. We follow any conditions it sets.

Water pools in one corner of my yard. What do you do?

We regrade that corner so water drains away before we seed.
