Cumberland Lawns on Ledge and Hills
Hydroseeding in Cumberland means dealing with hills and ledge. Diamond Hill, a massive white quartz outcrop in town, rises to 481 feet and has a 350-foot vertical drop, enough that it ran ski areas from 1939 into the 1980s. Lots across northern and eastern Cumberland share that rolling, rocky character, and steep yards are common.
Steep yards and slopes
The old ski slopes on Diamond Hill, now a 373-acre town park, are a good picture of how much grade some Cumberland lots have. On steep yards we use hydromulch with a high tackifier rate or a bonded fiber matrix, and on very steep pitches we stake down a blanket. Grass on a slope also needs the water to run across it, not down one channel, so we smooth out rills before spraying.
Old dairy fields
The historic Metcalf-Franklin Farm on Abbott Run Valley Road was the last working dairy farm in town, with open fields and farmers' stone walls. Former pasture ground makes decent lawn soil, but it is often compacted. Loosening the top few inches before seeding makes a big difference.
A big, growing town
With 36,405 people in 2020, Cumberland is the largest town in Rhode Island. New homes keep going up, and each needs a finished lawn and graded slopes. We work for builders and homeowners on everything from single lots to whole streets.
Valley Falls and Lonsdale
The southern villages near the Blackstone are older and flatter, with smaller lots. There the work is lawn renovation, drainage regrading and seeding after utility projects.

Cumberland Questions
My backyard is basically a hill. Can it be seeded?
Yes. We pick between heavy hydromulch, bonded fiber matrix or a blanket based on how steep it is.
Why does water cut ruts in my sloped lawn?
Runoff is concentrating in one path. We smooth the slope and may add a swale before seeding.
My new home is on an old farm field. Is the soil good?
Often it is, but it may be compacted. We loosen it and add topsoil where needed.
Do you work for builders with several lots?
Yes. We can schedule lots as each one is graded.
