Grass for a Changing Mill City

Hydroseeding in Pawtucket is tied to redevelopment as much as to home lawns. The city sits at Pawtucket Falls, where the Blackstone River becomes tidal and turns into the Seekonk River, and it lies within three drainage basins: the Blackstone, the Moshassuck and the Ten Mile. Big projects along those rivers, plus thousands of small city yards, keep both commercial and residential seeding steady.

Big sites on the move

Demolition of McCoy Stadium began in 2025, a soccer stadium has been going up along the Seekonk River, and a new Pawtucket/Central Falls train station opened in January 2023. Large disturbed sites like these need perimeter silt fence, inlet protection and quick temporary seeding of stockpiles and finished slopes. Hydroseed with a temporary cover crop keeps dust and runoff down between phases.

Old swamp, old farm

Slater Memorial Park, at 197 acres the city's largest, began as land the newspaper once called part swamp and part worn-out farm. Low swampy areas were dug out into ponds starting in 1907. Plenty of private lots in the city have the same story underneath: wet subsoil and thin, tired topsoil. We test drainage, add topsoil and grade for fall before seeding.

Mill-era ground

Mills went up along the Blackstone from the 1790s, and old industrial parcels can carry fill and foundations under the surface. On conversions and infill lots we plan for buried debris and bring in clean topsoil for the lawn areas.

City yards

Most Pawtucket houses sit on compact lots. A small hydroseed job is efficient here: one truck, a long hose, and an even coat across the front and back yards in an hour or two.

Pawtucket by the Numbers

  • Three basins. Pawtucket lies within the Blackstone (including the Seekonk), Moshassuck and Ten Mile River drainage basins.
  • Slater Park. Slater Memorial Park covers 197 acres; low swampy ground there was converted into ponds starting in 1907.
  • New station. The Pawtucket/Central Falls station on the MBTA Providence/Stoughton Line opened on January 23, 2023.
  • Blackstone River. The Blackstone reaches Pawtucket Falls and becomes tidal; a 1990 EPA report called it the most polluted river in the country because of toxic sediments.

Pawtucket Questions

Can you seed a construction stockpile to keep the dust down?

Yes. A temporary hydroseed mix with mulch holds the surface of soil piles and bare pads until final grading.

Why does my Pawtucket yard stay soggy?

Some parts of the city were swamp before they were built on. Regrading, and sometimes a drain line, helps before we seed.

Do you install inlet protection on city streets?

Yes, at catch basins near the site, as the erosion plan or the city requires.

Is my yard too small to hydroseed?

No. Small yards are quick for us, and the slurry gives even coverage that is hard to match by hand.
